Our perfect first home but not our forever home, why I moved from Long Branch to Clarkson

10 years had passed while living in Long Branch and as my kids started to age, I realized I wanted a bit more.
I grew up in the 80’s in a neighbourhood that offered leafy streets, familiar neighbours and a highstreet where I could buy candy a safe 15 minute walk from home. Having owned for 10 years, we had a fair amount of equity locked up in our first home, so we thought we had options, but weren’t sure how many. Where could I find space and the safety and charm of a smaller community, but near enough to Toronto should we need to access it?

The first thing I noticed when I drove into Clarkson was the sweet sign. Settled in 1808, What?!?! Where the heck was I? My girlfriend lured me out for a lunch at the club she was working at and little did I know that would put in motion a train I could never have predicted or stopped.

I drove past this charming high street with little bistros, nail salons, banks and a gas station; then behind a Canadian Tire entered a parking lot to The Ontario Racquet Club. A lovely laid back family club that offered tennis en masse, childcare and a pool with a resort-like setting in the summer. It seemed amazing!
I did a trial membership and then joined for a year and never looked back.

With each drive home I would choose a different route to explore this newfound area with new eyes. The homes were varied and I came to love the fact that it was wrapped in this historic fabric.
Some streets were extraordinary! Estates with mansions of varying ages gracing their beautifully manicured lawns, and some pockets had a more humble charm. The thing that stood out to me most though was that they all shone with a pride of ownership you want to see in your neighbourhood.
I was into Clarkson.

We made calls, got our numbers sorted and waited until the right house hit the market. When it did, we were ready. And with that, Clarkson became our new home. It’s a place where history meets modern life, where families find space to grow, and where there’s always something new to discover around the corner. From the charming high street to the welcoming community vibe, and with a GO train we could take to get to Union station in 26 minutes, Clarkson checked all the boxes. It’s a little gem that offers everything we were looking for. Safety, charm, and a connection to both the past and the present.
